Production Research

We have come to the decision to do a Thriller film and have looked at a variety of Thriller film such as Sci-Fi, Mystery, Action and Crime but decided to choose Mystery Thriller which will include the building of suspense, a possible murder and a mysterious theme.

Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan is a popular, English-American film director, producer and screen writer. Some of his well known Mystery Thriller films include Momento, The Prestige and Insomnia. He has created several of the most successful films of the early 21st century. His nine big films have grossed over $4.2 billion worldwide and garnered a total of 26 Oscar nominations and 6 awards. He is regarded as a post-modern filmmaker who is greatly influenced by black and white film noir from the 1940s and 50s, urban setting, low-key lighting and dialogue scenes framed in wide close-up with a shallow depth of field. His story telling technique is include flashbacks, shifting points and unreliable narrators. His films are rooted in philosophical and sociological concepts and ideas, exploring human morality, the construction of time, and the malleable nature of memory and personal identity.

Production Company Analysis

The '20th Century Fox' logo is  standing out on top of a building or very high platform in the middle of a city, which gives a possible sense that thousands of people are watching them. The surrounding lights are lighting up the logo, almost as if its highlighting it, showing its importance. The camera pans around the front of the logo and ends up with a low angle shot of '20th Century Fox' which shows a sense the power which the company hold.

The metal doors that open to the 'Lionsgate' logo could suggest they are welcoming the audience to their film no matter who it is. As the doors open the logo is placed in the sky surrounded by clouds and bright light which could be a small resemblance to stepping into 'film heaven'.

The word 'Paramount' in this logo is positioned on top of a mountain above the clouds. This could symbolise that 'Paramount' are on top of the world showing a sense of dominance. I did some research and found that the stars circling the logo are the actors signed with the company, possibly meaning they have the best actors in the movie business.

Survey and Results

We asked 10 people, 5 male and 5 female, to fill out our survey to get a series of results to compare and contrast. These are the results below that show our final statistics.

This graph shows the preferred genre claimed by the 10 people. Horror, Comedy and Other (which was Sci-Fi) all had 1 vote. Action and Adventure both had 2 votes. The most voted genre however, was Thriller with 4 votes. One of the respondents circled 2 genres, hence the reason why we have 11 votes total.
This graph shows the preferred sub-genre. Comedy Thriller only had 1 vote and Mystery and Phycological thriller both had 2 votes. Action Thriller was the best voted for preferred sub-genre with 6 votes. Crime and Other had no votes. Again, one of the respondents circled 2 sub-genres so we have 11 votes total.
In this survey we asked the 10 respondents to circle the most important way of building suspense. Half of them said that soundtrack is the most important. 3 respondents said characters and 2 said camera shots. So, for our Thriller we shall use a suspenseful soundtrack.
This graph shows how important the opening is to a Thriller film out of 10. 1 respondent said 6 or 7, 2 respondents said 9 and another 2 said 10. However, 5 people said 8. This means that a Thriller film opening is a fairly important aspect of the overall film.

This graph shows what gender Thriller films appeal to. All 10 respondents said the Male gender is the gender that Thrillers most appeal to. However, women do like Thriller films depending on the sub-genre. Our film will be targeted at both Male and Female so we are not singling out one or the other.

Target Audience

Typical Thrillers of any genre are aimed at 15 years or older, according to my research. Both male and females and a variety of social classes are attracted to many Thrillers. Our Thriller is aimed predominately at both genders as it is not in favour of one or the other.
